Professor Lüscher is active in variety of areas including research, writing, editing and much more.

Clinical activity

He has a broad clinical interest in the entire field of cardiovascular medicine from prevention (hypertension, lipid disorders, diabetes) to coronary artery disease (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction) to heart failure. He is an expert in pharmacotherapy and a trained interventional cardiologist regularly performing cardiac catheterizations and percutaneous coronary procedures (balloon angioplasty and stenting) as well as non-coronary interventions (percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale, TAVI and renal nerve ablation).

Research activities

Professor Lüscher’s research interests focus on the role of endothelium-derived mediators in the regulation of vascular tone, platelet-vessel wall interaction, coagulation and inflammation as well as their role in atherosclerosis, coronary artery, acute coronary syndrome and heart failure.

Editing activities

Further, he is co-editor of the European Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine and member of many editorial boards of scientific journals, from 2004 until 2016 editor-in-chief of Cardiovascular Medicine and from 2009 to 2020 Editor-in-Chief of the European Heart Journal.

Foundation for Cardiovascular Research

To support research at the highest level, Prof. Lüscher founded the Foundation for Cardiovascular Research in Basel in 1992, which is now located at the Zurich Heart House at Hottingerstrasse 14, 8091 Zurich. The Foundation supports young physicians and scientists from all over the world (→ Alumni), donated three professorships at the University of Zurich and provides highly qualified educational programmes for physicians. The foundation is supported by private donations, other foundations, income from its educational programmes, research contracts and sponsors.

Entrepreneurial activities

Furthermore, Prof. Lüscher has founded three start-up companies involved in the development of blood pressure devices, clinical research and clinical management of VIP patients.
